Thor Heyerdahl is one of Norway’s most well known explorers and remains an enduring international icon for many. His curiosity, sense of adventure, perseverance, and deep respect for other cultures feel especially relevant and necessary in today’s world. This project aims to highlight these values and make them relevant for a modern audience through an engaging and immersive experience that will inspire current and future generations to become explorers in their own right.
Our approach was therefore to implement a holistic design that integrated digital and analogue interactive elements with object-based storytelling.
Each room has its own character but is connected to create a simple, immersive, and memorable experience that reflects the breadth and depth of the story. The new experience takes visitors on a journey through the highlights and challenges of Heyerdahl’s expeditions. It provides insight into life in the Pacific and communicates Polynesian culture and the environmental challenges we face today. The exhibition aims to surprise, engage, and spark curiosity, creating an inspiring journey of discovery and reflection. Through thoughtful design and storytelling, the exhibition seeks to highlight this unique Norwegian cultural heritage and appeal to a modern audience, reinforcing the Kon-Tiki Museum’s position as one of Norway’s most iconic museums.
