The exhibition introduces the story of Brätte, once a significant trading hub by Lake Vänern. Flourishing in the late 1500s as a center for regional commerce and Swedish iron export, the town was abandoned with the founding of Vänersborg in 1644, later forgotten and rediscovered through 20th-century archaeological excavations.

The narrative draws attention to artefacts uncovered at the site: tools for woodworking and metalworking, household objects, personal items, and even cannonballs reflecting Brätte’s exposed borderland location. Traditional building methods inspired the design, including a solid timber wall and hand-crafted structures that recall historic techniques. All elements were conceived as self-supporting structures, allowing the exhibition to stand independently within the protected environment. A calm, acoustically soft environment—supported by textiles, carpets, and headphone-delivered sound—ensures accessibility for visitors with hearing impairments. At the centre, a reconstructed market stall presents typical goods whose prices and associated labour reveal everyday life in 17th-century Brätte.

Expology developed the exhibition design for Vänersborg Museum, shaping the visitor experience—from spatial concept and exhibition layout to interactive features and technical solutions tailored to the building’s historic interior.
